Bulldogs Fall in Five Sets to Bears

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Volleyball team dropped a five-set thriller to Southern Conference foe Mercer University Thursday evening.

With the loss, Samford's record falls to 8-11 overall and 3-4 in SoCon action. Mercer improves to 9-9 overall and 5-2 in league play.

Kaleigh Meritt enjoyed a career night on the floor, posting 22 kills and 16 digs for personal bests as a Bulldog and her second collegiate double-double. Gracie Lynn Butler also logged a double-double, registering 19 kills and 14 digs for her fifth of the season.

Ally Cordes recorded 12 kills on the night, while Kayla Keshock (33) and Lexi Thatcher (22) combined for 55 assists. Kate Morgan led the defensive efforts with a season-high 23 digs while Annabelle Straty added 10 digs.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 16-9 in set one, following one of Meritt's 10 kills in the opening stanza. Mercer chipped away down the stretch, however, with the score reading 24-23 Samford following a Bear ace. Meritt fittingly clinched the set for the Bulldogs with a kill to claim it 25-23.

Mercer took a 6-2 lead in set two, but the Bulldogs clawed their way back to eventually take a 16-15 lead following a kill by Butler. A late 3-0 run put Samford up 21-18, but the Bears responded with a 3-0 run to tie the score at 21 before the set eventually went into extra points. From there, the Bears claimed the final two points to even the match at one.

A back-and-forth set three saw the score read 14-14 following a Mercer kill from Aliyah Waldon. The Bulldogs created late separation with a pair of 3-0 runs that put them up 20-17, followed by a 4-0 to give them a 24-18 lead before taking the set 25-19.

Mercer took control of set four with a 7-0 run that put them up 18-10. From there, the Bears were able to secure a 25-16 win to force a fifth and final set.

In set five, Mercer used a 3-0 run to go up 5-3. Samford got within one point of the Bears six different times in the set and eventually tied the score at 13, but Mercer clinched the match by scoring the final two points of set five.

Samford set season highs in kills (65), assists (61), and digs (78) on the night, all while posting a .243 attack percentage.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 13 when they host Chattanooga for their annual Dig Orange Match. First serve from the Pete Hanna Center is set for 7:00 p.m. (CST).
