Bulldogs To Host Alabama State Saturday Evening

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
 – The Samford women's basketball team will return home to play host to Alabama State Saturday at 5 p.m. in the Pete Hanna Center.

The Bulldogs and Hornets will meet for the 19th time, with Samford owning a 13-5 series lead. The teams met last season in Montgomery, with ASU coming away with a 66-61 win.

Samford comes into Saturday night's game with a record of 3-0. This marks the best start to a season for Samford since beginning the 2009-10 season at 3-0. Most recently, Samford won at Troy, 65-61, Tuesday night.

So far this season, graduate transfer Lexie Pritchard leads the team in scoring and assists, averaging 13.3 points and 4.3 assists per game. She scored a career-high 19 points at Troy Tuesday night.  Sophomore Masyn Marchbanks is averaging 12.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. Sophomore Carly Heidger is scoring 11.0 points per game so far this season.

Samford head coach Carley Kuhns is in her fifth season in charge of the Samford women's basketball program. Kuhns enters Saturday night's game with a record of 127-89 overall and 61-58 in her time at Samford. The Bulldogs are 33-16 in home games under Kuhns.

Entering this weekend, Samford ranks second in the Southern Conference in field goal percentage (.462), three-point field goal percentage (.370), defensive rebounds (30.3 pg.) and blocked shots (3.3 pg.). Individually, Emily Bowman leads the league in blocked shots per game, averaging 2.7 blocks per contest.

Alabama State enters Saturday's game with a record of 0-4 on the young season. The Hornets have opened the season with an extremely tough schedule, falling in road games at Alabama (93-39), Memphis (95-51), SMU (96-47) and Oklahoma (92-46).

The Hornets have been led so far this season by Smya Ward, averaging 12.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Cordasia Harris is scoring 8.7 points and grabbing 4.3 rebounds per game. Alabama State head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson is in her 26th season as the Hornets head coach. She has accumulated a career record of 364-375 entering Saturday night's contest.
