SAMFORD GAME NOTES (PDF)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford women's basketball team will travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to compete in the Lady Eagle Classic over the Thanksgiving holiday. Samford will take on North Texas Friday at 1 p.m. and Southern Miss. Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Bulldogs and Mean Green are meeting for just the second time, with Samford winning the lone previous meeting, 67-53 in 2009. Samford and Southern Miss. will meet for the 10th time, with USM holding a 6-3 series lead. Last season, Samford earned a 71-59 win in the Pete Hanna Center.
The Bulldogs come into this weekend with a record of 4-0. This marks the best start to a season for Samford since beginning the 2008-09 season at 5-0. Most recently, Samford defeated Alabama State, 69-47 last Saturday night.
So far this season, sophomore
Masyn Marchbanks leads the team in scoring, averaging 12.5 points per game. Graduate transfer
Lexie Pritchard is scoring 11.5 points per game. She is also dishing out a team-high 5.3 assists per contest. Redshirt sophomore
Carly Heidger is averaging 11.0 points per game entering this weekend's tournament. Graduate transfer
Sadie Stetson has also been a key contributor so far this season. She is averaging 5.0 points and 3.0 rebounds per game.
Entering this weekend, Samford leads the Southern Conference in field goal percentage defense (32.6) and blocked shots per game (3.75 pg.). The Bulldogs are also second in the league in field goal percentage (44.3%), three-point field goal percentage (38.3%), three-point field goal percentage defense (24.4%) and free throw percentage (68.5%).
North Texas enters the tournament with a record of 4-1. The Mean Green is coming off a 79-73 win at Southern Illinois on Sunday. North Texas has been led so far this season by DesiRay Kernal, averaging 15.4 points per game. Jaaucklyn Moore is scoring 13.4 points per game so far this season.
Southern Mississippi has a mark of 4-0 so far this season. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 61-49 win over Valparaiso Tuesday evening. The Golden Eagles have been led by Domonique Davis, averaging 20.0 points per game. Morgan Sieper scores 11.3 points per game for Southern Miss.
