Softball Opens Home Slate As Part Of UAB Classic

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After spending Opening Weekend on the road, the Samford softball team will return home this weekend to host a quartet of games before heading across town to take on UAB as part of the UAB Classic on Sunday.

The action gets underway on Friday afternoon as the Bulldogs welcome the Ball State Cardinals to the Samford Softball Stadium for a home-opening doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. CT.

Following a neutral site game between Belmont and Lindenwood at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Samford will host Belmont at noon. The home portion of the weekend concludes with the Bulldogs playing the Lions of Lindenwood in the 2 p.m. nightcap.

Samford closes out the weekend with a 12:30 p.m. first pitch at UAB on Sunday.

The Bulldogs and the Cardinals of Ball State have met five previous times on the softball diamond with Samford holding a 3-2 all-time series lead. Samford also leads Belmont in the all-time series 10-5.

Samford and Lindenwood have never met in softball, while UAB holds a 31-6 series advantage.

Over the opening weekend, Southern Conference Preseason Pitcher of the Year McKenzie Newcomb tossed 11 shutdown innings in the Southern Miss-hosted Black & Gold Invitational with 11 strikeouts to pace the Bulldog pitching staff.

Logan Champion leads the Bulldog attack at the plate with a team-best four hits, while Taylor Harris and Gwynnie Hornibrook both recorded RBI's.
