Baseball Topped by Tigers on Saturday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Samford Baseball Team fell 11-6 in game two of its three-game set on Saturday at Memphis, dropping to 0-2 on the season.

Newcomer John Anderson led the Bulldogs with three hits on the day while Garrett Staton drove in three runs on two hits, including a three-run home run. Staton also scored a team-high two runs.

Stephen Klein knocked two hits, including an RBI triple, while Andrew Bennet knocked a triple and Josh Rodriguez added a sacrifice fly.

Brody Westbrooks tossed a game-high 3.1 innings of work after starter Jake Holifield (0-1) was chased in the second inning. Westbrooks struck out five batters while giving up just one run.

Timmy Watkins gave up two earned over two innings while Cole Fryman and Alex Gaeto each accounted for 0.2 innings of relief.

The Bulldogs tallied the first runs of the contest using an RBI triple from Klein and an RBI single from Anderson in the first to go up 2-0.

Memphis responded by scoring six runs over its first three at-bats, with a two-run homer from Logan Kohler knotting the score up at two in the first. The Tigers hung a three-spot in the second to go up 5-2, using a two-RBI double from Brayland Skinner and an RBI single from Jake Curtis to account for the damage.

The Tigers' expanded on their 6-2 advantage in the bottom of the seventh when an RBI single from Curtis and RBI double from Cameron Benson put them up 8-2.

The Bulldogs clawed their way back by tallying four runs in the top of the eighth. Rodriguez started off the scoring by bringing home Garrett Howe on a bases-loaded sac fly while Staton got Samford within striking distance with a three-run home run that trimmed Memphis' lead to 8-6.

The Tigers delivered the dagger in the bottom half of the eighth when Skinner's big day continued with a three-run blast that made it 11-6.

"Overall, we were just not good enough today," Head Coach Tony David said. "Ross was not able to go this weekend, so we pressed Jake into the start today and he just didn't have it. Brody did a great job keeping us in the game."

The Bulldogs were outhit in the contest, 15-11. Samford came up big with two outs, logging three runs and batting .357 (5-14) with two away on the day.

Both teams pitching staffs struck out nine batters, with the Bulldog stranding 13 Tiger baserunners.

"I am proud of the way we battled," David said. "We had several good at-bats leading up to Staton's home run in the eighth. Andrew jumped in there after the injury to Klein and got the big triple to get the tying run up late. We've had a strange stretch of injuries here early. Ross is working his way back and we have had Goff, Dreier, and Klein with some issues this weekend. Our guys will be ready to go tomorrow. Lynch had a strong finish to pre-season and will give us a good shot."

The Bulldogs will play their third and final game at Memphis on Sunday, with first pitch from FedEx Park slated for 1:00 p.m. (CST).
