Baseball Hosts Jacksonville State in Home Opener Tuesday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Baseball Team will play its first home contest of the 2023 season on Tuesday, Feb. 21 when they square off against Jacksonville State.

First pitch from Joe Lee Griffin Field is set for 4:00 p.m., with the game airing live on ESPN+.

The Bulldogs rallied from six runs down to knock off Memphis 9-8 in 11 innings on Sunday afternoon in their most recent contest. Samford used a five-run seventh inning to tie the game before eventually getting a game-winning two-run single from Kace Garner in the top of the 11th.

Carson Hobbs (1-0) pitched lights out over innings 8-10 to pick up the win while Ben Petschke (1) slammed the door shut in the 11th to lock down the W.

The Bulldogs dropped the first two games at Memphis, Falling 7-4 in game one on Friday and 11-6 in game two on Saturday.

Newcomer John Anderson went 5-13 over the opening weekend of play, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Garrett Staton led the Bulldogs with four runs scored and four driven in.

Samford dropped both contests to the Gamecocks last season including a 6-3 setback at home on April 19.

The Gamecocks enter their 22nd season under Head Coach Jim Case, who has posted a record of 647-531 during his tenure. His Jacksonville State baseball teams won seven Ohio Valley Conference Championships prior to joining the ASUN in 2022.

Jacksonville State knocked off Georgia 8-5 in their season opener on Feb. 17 before dropping the next two.

Senior T.J. Reeves and Sophomore pitcher AJ Causey both were named to the Preseason All-ASUN squad. Reeves batted .317 in 2022 with 23 extra-base hits while Causey posted nine saves and an ERA of 2.61 over 25 appearances.
