Samford Heads To Kennesaw State For Midweek Contest

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – To close out the opening month of the 2023 season, the Samford softball team heads east for a midweek matchup with the Owls of Kennesaw State.

The first pitch is slated for 4 p.m. CT on Tuesday and the game can be streamed on ESPN+. Samford's game notes can be found here.

Samford enters the contest with a 5-9 record after going 3-2 in the Samford Bulldog Classic over the weekend. All nine of the Bulldog losses on the year have come by three or fewer runs with seven coming by only one.

Kennesaw State brings a 4-10 record into Tuesday's matchup with Samford. The Owls went 1-4 at the Bama Bash with the lone win coming against No. 7 Alabama in the weekend finale.

Tuesday's game is the 16th meeting between the two programs. Kennesaw State leads the all-time series with a record of 10-5. After not playing for four seasons, the Bulldogs took all four games last year and outscored the Owls 7-1 in Kennesaw.

McKenzie Newcomb was named Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week after allowing only one earned run over 16.2 innings against No. 7 Alabama, Southern Indiana and IUPUI.

On the season, Newcomb ranks 25th nationally with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 11 and 44th with 44 total strikeouts.

Behind the plate, Bulldog catcher Logan Champion is tied for the national lead in caught stealing by with eight on the year.

Kennesaw native Grier Bruce leads Samford in almost every offensive category including slugging percentage (.622), runs scored (7), home runs (4) and RBIs (11). Bruce's four dingers rank her 58th nationally and third in the SoCon.
