BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Baseball Team will play the first of five-straight home games on Tuesday, March 1 when they host the Alabama State Hornets.
First pitch from Joe Lee Griffin Field is set for 4:00 p.m., with the contest airing live on ESPN+.
The Bulldogs most recently knocked off Southeastern Louisiana 9-3 in game three of their weekend series on Feb. 26. Garrett Howe led the offense with a four-hit, five-RBI day while Carson Hobbs struck out five over the final four innings to earn the save.
Hobbs was named the SoCon Pitcher of the Week on Monday after logging a pair of saves and striking out seven batters in five innings of work. The junior reliever leads the SoCon in earned run average (0.00), saves (2), and opponent's batting average (.120).
Jayden Davis comes in as the Bulldogs' leading hitter, sporting a .409 average through seven games. Stephen Klein and Howe both have driven in a team-high eight runs while Garrett Staton and Klein have scored a team-best eight runs.
Klein also leads the Bulldogs with an on-base percentage of .514 and has clubbed a team-high four extra-base hits with two doubles, a triple, and a homer
Samford recorded a pair of 6-5 wins against Alabama State last season, with the most recent coming on March 2 in Homewood.
The Hornets (5-3) won two of three games in the Andre Dawson Classic this past weekend, besting Grambling State (10-4) on Friday, Southern (7-5) on Saturday, and falling to New Orleans (18-7) on Sunday.
The Hornets were picked to finish first in the east division of the SWAC, while junior Corey King was named the SoCon Preseason Player of the Year.
Head Coach Jose Vazquez has posted a record of 165-124 in seven seasons at the helm, capturing his first SWAC title in 2022.
