Baseball Begins Busy Week with Midweek Contests Against UAB and Columbia

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Baseball Team will play a pair of midweek games this week, traveling to crosstown-rival UAB on Tuesday, March 14, and hosting Columbia on Wednesday, March 15.

Tuesday's contest at UAB will stream live on CUSA.TV and begin at 4:00 p.m. (CST). The Bulldogs' home contest against Columbia on Wednesday is set for a 4:00 p.m. (CST) start time and will stream live on ESPN+.

The Bulldogs are set to start redshirt-freshman righty Jacob Newman on Tuesday against the Blazers and former Samford skipper Casey Dunn. Newman has thrown two or more innings in each of his last three outings, including 2.1 innings his last time out against Morehead State on March 4. The Bulldogs have yet to name a starter for Tuesday against Columbia.

The Bulldogs fell 13-1 in seven innings in their series finale on Sunday at No. 1 LSU. Will Lynch (0-2) struck out four batters over four innings while conceding four runs and holding the potent Tiger offense to just three hits on the day.

Despite taking the loss in game one on Friday, Jacob Cravey struck out four over five innings while giving up just two earned runs on four hits. The junior righty enters the week ranking second in the SoCon in opponents' batting average (.162) and third in strikeouts (27).

Four Bulldogs currently sport an on-base percentage of .400 or better. Stephen Klein leads the way with an on-base clip of .435 while Lucas Steele (.422), Garrett Howe (.421), and John Anderson (.411) rank behind him.

UAB dropped a pair of games on Saturday, March 11 at the Mike Sansing Classic in Atlanta, Ga. The Blazers fell 3-2 to Michigan and 4-3 to Kennesaw State.

The Blazers are led on offense by Christian Hall, who comes in leading the team with 13 hits and 13 runs batted in. John mac Mullins boasts a .492 on-base clip and has scored a team-high 13 runs.

Columbia looks to keep things rolling after taking two of three games at No. 18 Alabama this past weekend. The Lions claimed game one against the Crimson Tide 10-7 on March 10 and won the series with a 15-3 routing in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday to clinch the series.

The Lions come in with a team average of .291 that leads the Ivy League. Hayden Schott leads the Ivy League in batting average at .442 while serving as one of five Lions batting over .300. Andy Blake (.340), Seth Dardar (.378), Weston Eberly (.344), and Anton Lazits (.333) are all hitting .333 or higher on the season.
