Softball Travels To Georgia For Bulldog Classic

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – To open the month of March, the Samford Softball team heads to Athens, Ga. for the Bulldog Classic hosted by No. 16 Georgia. 
  
The three-day tournament gets underway on Friday as the Bulldogs meet the Ball State Cardinals for the third time this season at 10:30 a.m. CT. Following the Ball State game, Samford will face the Stetson Hatters for the first time since 2006. The second game on Friday is for a 1 p.m. CT start. 
  
Saturday opens with a rematch against Stetson at 10:30 a.m. CT before a 3:30 p.m. CT nightcap with host Georgia. 
  
The Bulldogs will face off with each other at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday to wrap up the weekend. 
  
Both games against Georgia can be streamed on ESPN+, while Samford's game notes can be found here. 
 
Samford enters the weekend with a 5-10 record after falling to Kennesaw State in heartbreaking fashion on Tuesday. 
  
Samford and Ball State have already met this season, splitting a doubleheader for the Bulldog home opener. Stetson and Samford have met 21 previous times with the Bulldogs winning 11 contests. The Bulldogs of Samford are 0-3 all-time against the Bulldogs of Georgia. 
 
Samford has not beaten an SEC team since downing Mississippi State in 2007. The last Power Five foe that the Bulldogs beat on the softball diamond was Georgia Tech in 2020.
 
McKenzie Newcomb was named Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week after allowing only one earned run over 16.2 innings against No. 7 Alabama, Southern Indiana and IUPUI. 
  
On the season, Newcomb ranks 21st nationally with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 13.25 and 24th with 53 total strikeouts. 
  
Behind the plate, Bulldog catcher Logan Champion is tied for the national lead in caught stealing by with eight on the year. 
  
Kennesaw, Ga. native Grier Bruce leads Samford offensively with four home runs and 11 RBIs.
