Samford Stumbles In Weekend Finale At No. 18 Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – The Samford softball team concluded the weekend with an 11-3 defeat at the hands of the No. 18 Georgia Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon.

Samford drops to 6-14 on the year after going 1-4 on the weekend at the Georgia Bulldog Classic. The Bulldogs of Georgia improve to 17-5 after Sunday.

Sarah Squillace and McKenzie Newcomb each collected a pair of hits on the after, while Newcomb helped her own with an RBI in the contest. Sophomore catcher Logan Champion and junior shortstop Ansley Yantis also each drove in a run on Sunday.

Newcomb started the game in the circle and surrendered seven runs over five innings of work. Despite being handed the loss, the sophomore fanned eight Georgia batters in her outing.

Sunday's matchup looked to be a pitcher's duel as there wasn't a run scored until Georgia got on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the third.

Samford answered right back to tie at 1-1 in the top of the fourth when Kinley Pate, who was pinch running for Newcomb, came around to score on an RBI single to left off the bat of Yantis.

The home standing Bulldogs scored four runs in the home half of the fourth to regain the lead at 5-1.

Not to be deterred, Samford threatened in the top of the fifth, when Champion drove in McKayla Cothran with a double off the right field wall. Squillace came home to score two batters later on a fielder's choice off the bat of Newcomb to make it 5-3. The Samford threat continued as the Bulldogs had the bases loaded before being retired to end the frame.

Georgia matched Samford's two runs in the fifth before scoring four in the sixth for the 11-3 final score.

UP NEXT:
Samford will have the midweek off before heading to the Jacksonville State-hosted JSU Gamecock Invite, where the Bulldogs will face off with Western Michigan and Jacksonville State starting on Saturday, March 11.
