Baseball Hosts No. 18 Alabama Tuesday Evening

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Baseball Team (6-5) will host No. 18 Alabama (12-0) on Tuesday, March 7 in midweek action.

First pitch from Joe Lee Griffin Field is set for 6:00 p.m., with the contest streaming live on ESPN+.

Tuesday will be the 112th meeting between Samford and Alabama, with the Crimson Tide holding a 96-15 advantage. The Bulldog's most recent victory came in 2018, a 6-0 win in Tuscaloosa on April 17.

The Bulldogs most recently took two of three against Morehead State this past weekend at home. Samford swept a Friday doubleheader against the Eagles, with a walk-off home run by John Anderson in the eighth inning highlighting the nightcap.

Samford allowed just one run over its doubleheader sweep of Morehead State Friday, with junior righty Jacob Cravey facing just one over the minimum to log a complete-game victory.

Brody Westbrooks and Ben Petschke both tossed four shutout innings in game two for the Bulldogs, with Petschke fanning six.

Anderson leads the Bulldogs in both hits (14) and RBI (9) while Lucas Steele (1.315) and Stephen Klein (1.062) both sport an OPS over 1.000.

Five Bulldogs currently sport a batting average of .300 or higher plus an on-base percentage of .400 or better. Lucas Steele's .385 average leads the team while Stephen Klein's .479 on-base clip leads the Bulldogs.

Relievers Westbrooks and Trey Sanders come into the week with an ERA of 0.90 over 10 innings pitched. Westbrooks has fanned 11 while Sanders has logged seven strikeouts.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to start junior right-hander Carson Hobbs, with Alabama scheduled to throw sophomore righty Luke Holman. Hobbs enters the week boasting an earned run average of 0.00 and an opponent's batting average of .103. The senior right-hander has struck out 15 batters in 9.1 innings pitched and holds a 1-0 record with two saves over four relief appearances this season.

The Crimson Tide's 12-game winning streak ranks for the third-longest streak to start a season in program history, needing just three more wins to match the 1997 squad for most consecutive victories to start a season.

Alabama most recently swept the University of Illinois Chicago this past weekend in Tuscaloosa, tallying nine or more runs in all three games.

The Crimson Tide have scored 10 or more runs in eight games this season and rank second in the nation in batting average (.368) and on-base percentage (.485).

Reigning SEC Freshman of the Week Colby Shelton ranks sixth in the nation with seven home runs and leads the team with 17 RBI. Senior infielder Drew Williamson leads the squad with a .486 batting average while ranking second on the team in both home runs (5) and RBI (15).
