Baseball to Host Toledo for Weekend Series

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford Baseball Team will welcome the Toledo Rockets to Joe Lee Griffin Field this weekend for a three-game series, beginning with a 6:00 p.m. contest on Friday evening.
 
The Bulldogs will be celebrating "Alumni Weekend," with all former Bulldogs that RSVP receiving free admission. Contact the Director of Baseball Operations Parker Curry via email at pcurry@samford.edu for more information.
 
On Saturday, the Bulldogs will host "Pups in the Park" where pup cups, Samford bandanas, and other treats and prizes will be given out to four-legged spectators and their owners.
 
The Samford Bulldogs (18-15, 7-2 SoCon) fell 7-6 at Troy their last time out on Tuesday, April 11. Junior Andrew Bennett drove in four runs on the night with a pair of home runs.
 
In their most recent series, the Bulldogs claimed two of three weekend contests against UNCG to improve to 7-2 atop the SoCon. The Bulldogs won game one 9-2 on Thursday, April 6 behind five a homer effort and clinched the series on Saturday on a walk-off home run by senior catcher Kaden Dreier.
 
Klein comes in as the Bulldogs' leading hitter with a .382 batting average that ranks sixth in the SoCon. Garrett Staton leads the squad with 31 runs scored while John Anderson leads the club and SoCon with nine home runs and sits sixth with 31 RBI.
 
Freshman infielder Jayden Davis has hit safely in his last 17 games. Davis went 6-10 last week to help bolster his batting average to .360
 
The Bulldogs are scheduled to start Jacob Cravey in game one, Brody Westbrooks in game two, and Will Lynch in game three. Cravey comes into the weekend leading the SoCon in both batters struck out (62) and batters struck out looking (31)
 
In the most recent series between the Bulldogs and Rockets, Samford took two of three games in Birmingham on March 5-7 of the 2021 season. This weekend will be the fourth series between the two teams since 2004, where Samford holds a 6-3 advantage during that span.
 
Toledo fell 18-4 to Wright State on April 12 and won 18-9 at Youngstown State on April 11 in its most recent action.
 
Jeron Williams leads the Rockets in hitting with a .379 batting average, 53 base hits, and 16 multi-hit games. Williams additionally compiled a 24-game hitting streak earlier in the season.
 
Garret Pike has driven in a team-high 34 runs while Jackson Owen (11) and Mason Sykes (10) have both slugged double-digit home runs.
 
Noah Jackson (3-2) has struck out a team-high 54 batters over 43 innings of work and holds a 4.40 ERA coming into the weekend.
