Bulldogs Downed at Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. – The Samford Baseball Team brought the tying run to the plate with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning at Auburn on Tuesday evening but ultimately fell to the Tigers 13-3.

With the loss, Samford drops to 21-16 on the season while the Tigers improve to 21-15-1.

"I thought the guys did a great job of battling all night," Head Coach Tony David said. "The score is not an indication of what a good game that was. We go from having the tying run at the plate in the top of that inning to getting run-ruled in the bottom half. "

Garrett Howe led the Bulldogs at the plate by going 4-4 with a double and a run scored. Garrett Staton and Lucas Steele both logged an RBI while Hayden Perry accounted for a double and a run scored.

Jayden Davis and Andrew Bennett both added a hit, with Davis extending his current hitting streak to 21 games.

Starting pitcher Jacob Newman (2-2) shouldered the loss after surrendering four earned runs over 2.1 innings. Eight different Bulldogs combined to toss the final 5.2 frames, with freshman Nicholas Angelakos compiling a scoreless inning of work.

"Virtually everybody on the mound tonight did a good job," David said. "Ben had a really tough inning but as we get on the bus to go to Wofford this weekend, one thing I'm not worried about is Ben Petschke. He's our guy and he'll be our guy again if we're winning late."

The Tigers struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, courtesy of an infield single turned throwing error that brought in a pair. The Bulldogs answered by trading a run for two outs off the bat of Aaron Walton in the top of the second. Howe led off the frame with a single and was brought around to third on a Bennett single to right.

Samford evened the score at two in the top of the third on a two-out RBI double to right center from Steele. Staton led off the inning with a hit batsman and was brought to second by Stephen Klein via a 4-3 putout.

Auburn went back on top after tallying three runs in the bottom of the third. Cole Foster knotted the game at three on a leadoff solo shot while Bryson Wared knocked an RBI single and Kason Howell worked a bases-loaded walk.

A second RBI single from Ware in the bottom of the fourth put the Tigers up 6-2 but the Bulldogs got back to within three runs on an RBI single up the middle by Staton in the fifth. Perry began the inning by lacing a lead-off double to left center.

The Tigers took a 7-3 lead on a Cooper McMurray solo homer in the seventh. The Bulldogs made things interesting late when a leadoff single by Davis, followed by a Steele walk and a Howe infield hit, loaded up the bases with two away in the top of the eighth. Andrew Bennett fought off multiple tough pitches before eventually being retired on strikes.

Auburn took advantage of RBI knocks from Bobby Peirce and Ike Irish and a bases-loaded walk before Howell ended the contest on a three-RBI double down the left-field line.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Friday, April 21 when they begin a three-game Southern Conference series at Wofford. First pitch from Spartanburg, S.C. is set for 5:00 p.m. (CST).
