Bulldogs Stumble Late In Historic Midweek Contest To Kennesaw State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In the longest game in school history, the Samford softball team fell 8-4 on Wednesday to the Kennesaw State Owls in 13 innings.

Wednesday's 13-inning marathon surpassed 2017's 12-inning affair with Mississippi State for the longest game in Samford softball history.

After dropping Wednesday's game, the Bulldogs move to 20-28 on the season. Kennesaw State improves to 16-30.

Lainey Baker got the starting nod for Samford and was handed a no-decision after allowing three runs in four innings.

Despite being tagged with the loss, Jordyn Partain tied her career-high with seven strikeouts over a season-high eight innings of work. The sophomore scattered one earned run and four hits over her eight innings of relief.

Sarah Squillace and Lindsey Nelson each had two hits, scored a run and drove in another on the evening. Grier Bruce extended her on-base streak to 14 games when she was hit by a pitch in the first inning.

After allowing a run in the top of the first, the Samford bats started hot when Merritt Cahoon placed a two-run double down the left field line that scored Bruce and Squillace. A handful of pitches later, Nelson brought home Cahoon with an RBI single to center that extend the Bulldog lead to 3-1 after the first.

A two-run Kennesaw State home run in the top of the fourth tied the game at 3-3 and set the stage for the longest game in program history.

After nine seven scoreless innings from the fifth to the 11th, the Owls scored on a bases loaded walk in the top of the 12th inning.

Samford answered immediately with a two-out rally. Nelson came home to score on a Squillace single to force a 13th frame.

Kennesaw State scored four runs in the top of the 13th to take the midweek matchup by a score of 8-4.
