BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team will take on Southern Mississippi Friday in the NCAA Auburn Regional as the pairings for the 2023 NCAA Baseball Tournament were announced Monday afternoon
 
"We're excited about the opportunity to be playing in the postseason," Samford head coach Tony David said. "We kind of feel like we've set that standard here, especially over the last five or six years to where any season we play, if we don't get into this part of postseason, we feel like it's a little bit disappointing. Our guys are excited about it and it's a great field. Obviously when you get to this point of things, anybody you play is going to be a really good baseball team, so we are looking forward to going down there."
 
Samford is the No. 3 seed in the four-team regional, and the Bulldogs will face off with the No. 2 seed Southern Miss Friday at a yet-to-be-determined time. Along with the Samford-Southern Miss game, the host school and regional No. 1 seed Auburn will take on the No. 4 seed Pennsylvania. The regional will be played in a double-elimination format and the championship game is scheduled for Sunday with the winner of the regional taking on the winner of the Clemson Regional for a chance to go to the College World Series.
 
Samford punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament by winning the Southern Conference Tournament last week. After splitting their first two games in the tournament, the Bulldogs pulled off an extremely rare feat by winning three games on Saturday to win the tournament title. Samford started the day with a 9-5 win over UNC Greensboro, which sent the Bulldogs to the championship round where they would have to defeat Wofford twice. Samford then earned a 7-2 win over the Terriers to force a winner-take-all championship game. In that final game, Samford picked up a 5-2 win over Wofford for the tournament championship.
 
This marks Samford's fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs reached the finals of the 2012 Tallahassee Regional with two wins over SEC Tournament champion Mississippi State. Samford returned to Tallahassee in 2018, upsetting seventh-ranked Florida State on its home field. Most recently, the Bulldogs competed in the 2021 Starkville Regional, facing eventual national championship Mississippi State.
 
Samford won its second Southern Conference regular season title this year as well. The Bulldogs have an overall record of 36-23, and the team posted a record of 15-6 in SoCon play. Southern Miss has a record of 41-17 overall and 22-8 in Sun Belt Conference play.
 
Samford and Southern Miss have met nine previous times in baseball, with the Golden Eagles holding a 6-3 series lead. The teams last played in 2016 in a three-game series in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, with USM winning two of the three games. Samford and Auburn have played 103 times, with the Tigers owning a 77-25-1 advantage. The teams met once this season, in Auburn, with the Tigers winning, 13-3. Samford and Pennsylvania have never met in baseball.
