BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University soccer team fell to the Western Carolina Catamounts, 1-0, in the Southern Conference opener for both teams Thursday night at Shauna Yelton Field.
With the loss, Samford fell to 4-3-3 overall and 0-1 in Southern Conference play. Western Carolina improved to 4-2-3 overall and 1-0 in league play.
Western Carolina's Abbie Lainhart scored the game's lone goal in the 26
th minute. She netted the goal off an assist from Isabella DeMarco.
Samford was led in the match by
Mary Raymond and
Nikki Bario with three shots and one shot on goal each. As a team, Samford had 15 shots, to Western Carolina's six. The Bulldogs had 11 corner kicks to none for the Catamounts.
Samford will play at Wofford on Sunday, Sept. 24. The game is set for a 12 p.m. (CT) start from Spartanburg, S.C.
