BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 21-25, 23-25) decision to Wofford Friday evening in the Pete Hanna Center.
With the loss, Samford fell to 12-7 overall and 6-3 in Southern Conference play. Wofford improved its record to 16-6 overall and 8-2 in league play.
Samford was led in the loss by
Gracie Lynn Butler with 21 kills and 11 digs.
Kaleigh Meritt had 14 kills and 10 digs, while
Kate Wonus tallied 14 kills.
Kate Morgan had a team-high 19 digs.
For Wofford, Bri Mahoney had 13 kills and 15 digs. Sarah Maclean also had 13 kills, while Bradley Brown had 12 kills.
In the first set, Wofford jumped out to an 8-5 lead. Samford came back to tie the score at 9-9 after a Wofford attack error. The Terriers, however, scored the next three points to take a 12-9 lead. Wofford built its lead to four points at 21-17. The Bulldogs cut the lead to 22-20 after a Wofford service error, but Wofford took the set, 25-21.
Samford took an early 8-3 lead in the second set following block assists by
Ally Cordes and Wonus. Wofford fought back to tie the score at 10-10. The set stayed tight the rest of the way. With Wofford leading, 22-20, Samford scored the next four points to take a 24-22 lead. After Wofford cut the lead to 24-23, a kill by Butler gave Samford the 25-23 set victory.
In the third set, Wofford scored the first five points to take an early 5-0 lead. Samford fought back to cut the lead to one point at 7-6 after a kill by Wonus. Wofford then went on to build a 15-11 lead. Samford came back to cut the lead to one point at 18-17, but Wofford went on a 5-0 run to take a 23-17 lead. After Samford scored three-straight points to cut the lead to 23-20, Wofford scored two of the next three points to take the set, 25-21.
Wofford took an early 5-2 lead in the fourth set. Samford fought back to take a 9-7 lead following block assists from
Lexi Thatcher and
Ashley Evans. With the score tied at 10-10, Samford scored seven of the next 10 points to take a 17-13 lead. Wofford fought back to take a 22-20 lead. After Samford tied the score at 22-22, Wofford scored three of the next four points to take the set, 25-23 and the match, 3-1.
Samford will play host to the Chattanooga Mocs Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Pete Hanna Center.
