Stetson Ties School Record In Win Over Montevallo

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford graduate guard Sadie Stetson tied the school record for three-pointers in a game as the Bulldogs earned an 87-71 win over Montevallo Tuesday morning in the Pete Hanna Center.

With the win, Samford improved its record to 2-5 on the young season. Montevallo is now 1-3 with the loss. The game was Education Day for Samford, with a large group of children from area schools attending the game.

"Obviously, it's always great when you score that many points," Samford head coach Carley Kuhns said. "I still think we had missed opportunities, our free throws, we've got to clean that up. That team played hard, and we knew they would from watching film and their coach does a good job with that group."

Stetson scored a career-high 24 points making 8-of-12 shots, all from three-point range. Emily Bowman posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Claire Johnson scored 12 points for the Bulldogs, while Kennedy Langham added 10 points for Samford. Annie Ramil barely missed a double-double with eight points and 12 rebounds.

"Obviously Sadie had an incredible game," Kuhns said. "It was nice to see her get going. That's what we need her doing, she puts in countless hours and it's nice to see her work pay off. We had five players in double figures, different people tonight, and that's going to be big for us, we need people stepping up, coming off the bench ready to produce for this team."

For Montevallo, Isabel Grimes led the team with 16 points. Jordan Gillies had 15 points for the Falcons.

Montevallo jumped out to an early 5-2 lead with 8:02 to go in the first quarter after a layup by Grimes. Samford answered with a 12-3 run to take a 14-8 lead at the 4:47 mark in the first period after a three-pointer by Johnson. Montevallo fought back to tie the game at 14-14, but Samford scored the final five points of the first quarter to take a 19-14 lead at the end of the period.

Samford built its lead to eight points at 23-15 with 8:01 left in the second quarter following a pair of free throws from Johnson. Montevallo came back to cut the lead to two points at 27-25 with 2:21 left in the second period after a three-pointer by Carlyn Burdette. Samford then went on an 8-0 run to push its lead to 10 points at 35-25 after a layup by Bowman. Samford took a 35-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Bulldogs opened the third quarter hot, expanding their lead to 17 points at 46-29 with 7:22 to go in the period following a three-pointer by Langham. Montevallo fought back to cut the lead to nine points at 51-42 with 4:59 to go in the third quarter following a layup by Grimes. Samford held a 60-49 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Samford pushed the lead out to 19 points at 80-61 with 3:54 left in the game following a three-pointer by Aubrey Blankenship. Samford led by as many as 20 points down the stretch and the Bulldogs finished with the 87-71 win.

Next up, Samford will play at Vanderbilt on Friday, Nov. 22. The game is set for a 6:30 p.m. start from Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville, Tennessee.
