Samford Falls In UNF-JU Invitational Doubleheader On Saturday

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – The Samford softball team stumbled in a pair of games on Saturday in the UNF-JU Invitational as the Bulldogs dropped a 2-1 decision to the North Florida Ospreys and a 7-2 affair to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

With the losses, Samford enters the midweek with a 1-8 record. After playing the Bulldogs, UNF improves to 6-3 and Notre Dame moves to 6-2.

In the UNF game, Jordyn Partain started in the circle for the Bulldogs and took the loss after allowing two earned over four innings. Sara Bond pitched a scoreless pair of innings in relief.

The junior duo Sarah Squillace and Logan Champion led the Samford offense in the first game as Squillace tallied her first double of the season and Champion smacked her first home run in 2024. Mckayla Cothran and Kinsey Hargis each recorded base hits of either own to round out the Bulldog attack.

The home-standing Ospreys got the scoring going early with an RBI double in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. UNF added what proved to be the winning run in the fourth with an RBI single in the fourth to make it a 2-0 contest.

Down to the squad's last three outs, Champion clobbered a leadoff homer in the top of the seventh to jump-start a Bulldog comeback before UNF shut the door on the 2-1 final.

Against Notre Dame, Bond was tagged with the defeat despite allowing one earned run over a span of 2.1 innings pitched. In relief, McKenzie Newcomb surrendered five earned on nine hits during her 3.2 innings of relief.

Junior Mckayla Cothran had a career-high three hits and scored one in Saturday's nightcap. Freshman Olivia Shaw recorded the first multi-hit game of her young Bulldog career.

After a quiet first inning, Notre Dame scored one in the second before a three-run home run made it 4-0 for the Fighting Irish after three innings in the book.

Samford's first run of the contest came in the fourth when Linsey Hargis came home to score on a Notre Dame error.

The Fighting Irish lead ballooned to 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth with three runs in the frame. Samford's final run of the game came in the top of the seventh when Champion singled to center and scored Cothran to make it a 7-2 final.
