GAME NOTES--SAMFORD VS. JACKSONVILLE STATE (PDF)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team (3-0) will play host to in-state rival Jacksonville State (2-1) Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The game can be seen live on ESPN+.
Samford is scheduled to start freshman right-handed pitcher
John Malone Tuesday. Malone made one appearance in relief last weekend and will be making his first start Tuesday. Jacksonville State is scheduled to start junior right-handed pitcher Austin Cornelius. He started one game over the weekend, tossing 3.0 innings and allowing two runs.
Samford and Jacksonville State will be meeting for the 89th time, with JSU holding a 54-34 series lead. Last season, Samford won both meetings, earning a 7-6 win at home and a 10-6 victory in Jacksonville.
Samford opened the season with a three-game sweep of Queens, winning by scores of 12-2 (7 inn.), 12-1 (7 inn.) and 16-6 (8 inn.). In the series with Queens, Samford freshman
Angelo Prieto batted .583 with two home runs and seven RBI.
Lucas Steele also homered twice in the series, and
John Anderson,
Josh Rodriguez and
Jackson Harris had one homer each.
Jacksonville State won two-of-three games from Memphis over the weekend. JSU won game one, 6-5 (13 inn.) and game three, 13-9 (10 inn.), and dropped game two by a score of 7-4. Gabe Johnson batted .545 to lead JSU in the series.
