LEXINGTON, Va. – For the fifth time in as many tries, the Samford track and field teams swept the Southern Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday and Sunday at the event that was hosted by VMI.
The women's team scored 160.5 points to earn its ninth straight conference crown. The men's squad tallied 188 points for a fifth-straight title.
Individually, Samford student-athletes claimed 10 individual titles and both men's and women's 4x400 meter relays.
Graduate Student Cagan Campbell led the Bulldogs by winning the men's 200 meter, men's 400 meter and anchored the 4x400 meter relay team along the way to being awarded the Heath Whittle Award as the men's most outstanding athlete.
Samford's dominance in the men's heptathlon continued as freshman Samuel Werner with a score of 5,380 points.
The hurdles duo of Titus Moore (7.80) and Amiel Dabney (8.57) each won their respective 60-meter hurdle events.
A trio of freshmen Bulldogs also impressed on the weekend as Zephaniah Carico-McLennan won the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:51.7, Arthur Chitty took home top billing in the men's high jump of 2.10 meters and Carl Henry claimed the shot put title with a throw of 15.38 meters.
Rounding out the Samford titles, Hannah Daffin defended her crown in the weight throw with a toss of 17.87 meters.
The Bulldogs will next head to the NCAA Indoor Championship, March 8-9 in Boston, Massachusetts.
