BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Following a victory over Alabama State in the midweek, the Samford softball team will hit the road as the Bulldogs head east for an Easter Weekend series at Wofford.
The three-game weekend series will open with a doubleheader on Friday starting at noon CT and will conclude on Saturday at the same time. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+ and Samford's game notes can be found here.
Samford is coming off a 4-0 win against Alabama State in the midweek that pushed the Bulldogs' season record to 7-23. On the opening weekend of Southern Conference play, Samford dropped all three games to Chattanooga at home.
Wofford enters the holiday weekend with a record of 11-13 on the season after falling in a midweek contest to Gardner-Webb by a score of 7-6. The Terriers opened league play by dropping two of three games to Mercer.
Friday's series opener will be the first time that the Bulldogs and the Terriers will have faced off against each other on the softball diamond.
Offensively the Bulldogs are paced at the top of the lineup by the junior duo of
McKayla Cothran and
Sarah Squillace. Cothran leads Samford in batting average at .327 while Squillace ranks third with a .294 average.
The heart of the order features one of the best young hitters in the conference as
Katie Campbell leads the squad with eight home runs and 30 RBIs.
Grier Bruce is amongst all Bulldogs with a trio of homers and 18 runs driven in.
Junior
Logan Champion is threat on both sides of the ball as the Bulldog catcher is batting .298 with a team-high two triples, two home runs and 14 RBIs. Champion also ranks 29th nationally having eight potential base stealers.
With Southern Conference Preseason Pitcher of the Year
McKenzie Newcomb missing a large amount of the first part of the season, the Bulldogs have turned to the junior
Jordyn Partain and freshman
Karley Fuller in the circle. Partain leads the SoCon with 83.2 innings pitch so far this season while Fuller tossed Samford's first complete game no-hitter on March 8 against Detroit Mercy to open the UNA Tournament.
