BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Three Samford pitchers combined on a no-hitter in the second game of a doubleheader sweep of Longwood Friday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field. Samford won the first game, 6-3 and then took game two by a score of 14-0, both in seven innings.
The no-hitter marked the first for Samford since 2002 when Frank Allen Yielding accomplished the feat against VMI.
Alex Flood (1-0) started the game on the mound for Samford, tossing 5.0 innings, striking out five batters and walking four to earn the win.
Heath Clevenger and
Cole Fryman tossed an inning each to wrap up the no-hit win.
"It's the first of my career and I was a high school head coach for six or seven years, I've been at the college level for 21 years and here at Samford for 20," Samford head coach Tony David said of the no-hitter. "They're rare, however you come by them. The guys wanted it in the dugout. But it's something for them to rally around, and they earned themselves some pitcher BP this week."
In that game two win,
Cade Carr homered and drove in three runs.
John Anderson and
Andrew Bennett drove in two runs apiece, while
Garrett Howe,
Parker McDonald,
Brayden Broome,
Hayden Perry,
Cullen Horowicz and
Aaron Walton drove in one run each for the Bulldogs.
Samford broke game two open with seven runs in the bottom of the second inning. Anderson and Bennett drove in two runs each in the inning. Walton, Howe and Horowicz had one RBI each in the second as Samford grabbed the 7-0 win.
In the fourth inning, Anderson scored on a wild pitch and Carr hit a three-run home run for an 11-0 Samford advantage. In the fifth inning, McDonald, Broome and Perry each had RBI singles to make the final score 14-0.
In the first game of the twin bill, Walton went 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI.
Jackson Harris also drove in two runs in the first game for the Bulldogs.
Michael Ross (6-0) pitched 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on two hits, and striking out nine batters to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
Carson Lore pitched the final inning to pick up his second save of the season.
Longwood took an early lead with two runs in the top of the second inning. Samford came back with a run in the bottom of the third inning when Walton hit a solo home run to left field to cut the lead to 2-1.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Samford plated five runs to take a 6-2 lead. Harris singled up the middle to drive in
Josh Rodriguez and Anderson to give Samford the lead. Walton then hit a three-run homer to left field for a four-run Samford advantage. Longwood added one final run in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 6-3.
With the doubleheader sweep, Samford improved its record to 18-8. Longwood dropped its record to 12-15 with the losses.
Samford and Longwood will conclude their three-game series with a single game Saturday at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
