GAME NOTES--SAMFORD VS. NORTH ALABAMA (PDF)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team will travel to Florence, Ala., to take on the North Alabama Lions on Tuesday. The game is set for a 4 p.m. start and can be seen live on ESPN+.
 
Samford is scheduled to start left-handed pitcher Miller Riggins (0-0, 9.00 ERA) on the mound in Tuesday's game. North Alabama has named right-handed pitcher Dane Sykes (0-0, 7.20 ERA) as its starter.
 
Samford and North Alabama have met 15 previous times, with UNA holding a 12-3 series lead. The teams split two games last season, with the home team winning both games. Samford earned a 12-1 win in Birmingham, and UNA took an 11-10 win in Florence.
 
Samford enters the game with a record of 8-4, and most recently swept a four-game series from Bellarmine at home. So far this season, Samford has been led at the plate by Garrett Howe, batting .525 (21-of-40) with six doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI. John Anderson is hitting .444 (16-of-36) with three doubles, three home runs and 14 RBI.
 
As a team, Samford currently ranks second in the SoCon in home runs with 19. Individually, Howe leads the SoCon in batting average (.525), hits (21) and doubles (6), and he ranks second in the league in on-base percentage (.623) and runs scored (20). Garrett Staton ranks second in the SoCon in home runs (5) and third in both runs scored (18) and RBI (16). Josh Rodriguez ranks third in doubles (5). Brooks Rice ranks third in the SoCon in batters struck out (20).
 
North Alabama enters the week with a mark of 3-8. The Lions dropped two-of-three games to UAB over the weekend. The Lions have been led at the plate by Kyle Machado, batting .341 with three doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI. Gehrig Frei is hitting .263 with a double, a home run and four RBI.
