Samford Softball Hosts Belmont Thursday, Heads To UNA Tournament On Weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In the final weekend tune-up before Southern Conference play starts, the Samford softball team is set to host Belmont on Thursday at Samford Softball Stadium before taking part in the North Alabama-host UNA Tournament that begins on Friday.

Thursday's midweek with Belmont is slotted for a 2 p.m. start time and will double as the team's "In Our Softball Era" game with Taylor Swift walk-up songs and friendship bracelets.

The two-day UNA Tournament begins on Friday for the Bulldogs as Samford is set to take on Detriot Mercy at 11:30 a.m. before facing off with Murray State at 2 p.m. to close out the day.

Friday gets underway at 10 a.m. with the fourth and final meeting of the season between Southern Miss and Samford. A showdown with UMES at 3 p.m. on Saturday will conclude the weekend for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs and Bruins of Belmont have also already met on the softball diamond this season as Belmont took the opening game of the Jacksonville State-hosted Cocky Classic by a score of 8-4.

Samford is one of 12 teams in Division I softball this season set to face the same non-conference four or more times as the Bulldogs are scheduled to take on Troy and Southern Miss four times each in 2024.

On the season, Samford is 1-2 against the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss with a combined 59 runs between the two teams in those three meetings.

Friday's tournament opener between the Bulldogs and the Titans of Detroit Mercy will be the first time that the two squads have met on the softball diamond in program history. Murray State leads the all-time series with Samford 7-2 but the Racer and Bulldogs have not played each other since 2019. Samford's lone meeting with UMES was a 17-1 Bulldog victory in 2014.

Samford enters the weekend with a record of 3-16 after going 1-4 at the Mississippi State-host Bulldog Invitational last time out.

Following a monster weekend at the Bulldog Invitational, Bulldog outfielder McKayla Cothran leads the team offensively with a .306 batting average. Katie Campbell has a team-best four home runs and is tied with Grier Bruce for team lead in RBIs with 12.

In the circle, junior Jordyn Partain has been the workhorse of the Samford pitching staff tossing a team-high 45.2 innings with 33 strikeouts and a team-leading 4.45 ERA.
