GAME NOTES--SOCON TOURNAMENT (PDF)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford women's basketball team will open play in the Southern Conference Tournament by taking on Wofford Thursday at 2:30 p.m. CT at Harrah's Cherokee Center in Asheville, N.C. The game can be seen live on ESPN+.
The Bulldogs and Terriers have met 37 previous times, with Samford owning a 26-11 series lead. The teams split the season series, with each team winning at home. The Samford-Wofford winner will advance to the tournament semifinals to take on the winner of the UNC Greensboro-Furman game Friday at 12:30 p.m. (CT). The championship game is set for Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT).
The Bulldogs come into this tournament with a record of 14-15 overall and 6-8 in SoCon play. The team dropped a 76-69 decision at Mercer last Saturday.
So far this season,
Carly Heidger leads the team in scoring, averaging 9.8 points per game.
Sadie Stetson is averaging 8.9 points per game. She also leads the squad in steals, averaging 1.5 steals per game. Freshman
Kennedy Langham averages 8.4 points per game.
Masyn Marchbanks averages 8.7 points per game, while
Lexie Pritchard averages 6.1 points per game. Pritchard also leads the team in assists, dishing out 2.8 per game.
Emily Bowman averages 8.1 points and a team-high 8.5 rebounds per game. She leads the SoCon and ranks 14th in the nation in blocked shots per game, averaging 2.55 per contest. She currently holds the single-season records for blocked shots (72) and rebounds (247). She had a school-record 19 rebounds and seven blocks against Furman.
Samford ranks third in the Southern Conference in blocked shots, averaging 3.86 per game. Individually, in addition to leading the league in blocks, Bowman ranks second in the SoCon in rebounding (8.5). Pritchard ranks fifth in the league assists per game (2.8), while Stetson ranks fifth in steals per game (1.5).
Samford has an all-time record of 17-12 in SoCon Tournament games. The Bulldogs have won the event three times, claiming tournament titles in 2011, 2012 and 2020.
The Wofford Terriers enter Thursday's game with a record of 16-12 overall and 8-6 in Southern Conference play. The Terriers wrapped up the regular season with an 84-67 loss to Chattanooga last Saturday.
Wofford has been led this season by Rachael Rose, averaging 22.1 points, 8.6 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game. Maddie Heiss is averaging 10.7 points per game for the Terriers. Annabelle Schultz currently averages 9.3 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.
