Samford Softball Drops Midweek Contest At Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. – On a night that saw the return of the reigning Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year, the Samford Softball team fell 8-0 to the in-state foe Auburn Tigers in five innings on Wednesday evening at Jane B. Moore Field. 
 
With the defeat, the Bulldogs move to 9-25 on the season. Auburn improves to 17-11-1 after prevailing victorious in the first game of April. 
 
Jordyn Partain (5-13) started in the circle for Samford and took the loss for the Bulldogs. The junior allowed three runs on one hit and walked three Tigers over the opening 2/3 of the first inning.
 
In relief, Sara Bond tossed 1.1 innings and surrendered three runs on three hits with a pair of walks. 
 
The evening was capped off by the return of McKenzie Newcomb to the circle for Samford. In her first action since Feb. 17, Newcomb threw the final two innings giving up a pair of runs on three hits. Newcomb also fanned a trio of Tigers. 
 
A trio of Auburn pitchers, led by Maddie Penta, held the Bulldog offense in check and did not allow a Samford baserunner throughout the five-inning game. 
 
Auburn got on the board early with a three-run home run in the first inning. In the second, the Tigers added three more runs on a two-run blast and an RBI double to right center that came with two outs. The final pair of runs came on a two-run two-out triple in the third to make it an 8-0 contest. 
 
UP NEXT
Samford is set to return to league play on the weekend as the Bulldogs welcome the defending SoCon champion UNCG Spartans to Birmingham for a three-game series starting on Saturday.
