Softball Set To Host UNCG For Weekend Series

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In a rematch of the 2023 Southern Conference Tournament Finals, the Samford softball team returns home for a weekend series with the UNCG Spartans.

The three-game series will get underway with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. before a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday closes out the weekend. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+ and Samford's game notes can be found here.

Entering the third weekend of SoCon play, the Bulldogs are 9-24 overall with a 2-4 mark in league play.

The defending conference champion Spartans will bring an overall record of 23-14 to Birmingham with a perfect 6-0 record in SoCon play.

Offensively, the Bulldogs are paced at the top of the lineup by the junior duo of McKayla Cothran and Sarah Squillace. Cothran leads Samford in batting average at .330 and 37 base hits, while Squillace is slashing .305 with 37 hits herself.

The heart of the order features one of the best young hitters in the conference as Katie Campbell leads the team with nine home runs and 31 RBIs. Grier Bruce ranks second on the squad with three homers and 18 RBIs while Logan Champion has a pair of triples to pace the Bulldogs.

On the national stage, Campbell ranks top 100 nationally in hit-by-pitches (7/61st), hit-by-pitch per game (0.21/81st), home runs (9/55th), home runs per game (0.27/69th) and RBIs (31/95th).

In the circle, Jordyn Partain has become the leader of the Bulldog pitching staff tossing a Southern Conference-high 93.2 innings with a league-best nine complete games.

After missing 25 games, McKenzie Newcomb returned to the circle for the Bulldogs against Auburn in the midweek. Newcomb pitched the final two innings allowing a pair of runs and striking out a trio of Tigers.
