Samford Baseball Travels To North Alabama For Wednesday Contest

GAME NOTES--SAMFORD AT NORTH ALABAMA (PDF)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford University baseball team will travel to Florence, Ala., to take on the North Alabama Lions Wednesday at 4 p.m. The game can be seen live on ESPN+.
 
Samford and North Alabama have met 15 previous times, with UNA holding a 12-3 series lead. The teams split two games last season, with the home team winning both games. Samford earned a 12-1 win in Birmingham, and UNA took an 11-10 win in Florence. The teams will play again next Tuesday, May 7, at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
 
Samford will start right-handed pitcher Heath Clevenger on the mound Wednesday night. Clevenger has a record of 1-2 and an ERA of 7.08 ERA so far this season. Wednesday night's game will mark his 13th appearance and fourth start of the season. North Alabama has yet to name a starter for Wednesday evening's contest.
 
Samford has a record of 28-15 overall and 10-2 in SoCon play. The Bulldogs won two-of-three games over Liberty over the weekend. Liberty took game one, 10-7 in 10 innings, but Samford came back to take the final two contests, winning by scores of 10-3 and 12-1.
 
So far this season, Samford has been led at the plate by John Anderson, batting .401 with 15 doubles, 11 home runs and 50 RBI. Garrett Howe is hitting .371 with 11 doubles, six home runs and 34 RBI. Andrew Bennett has a .358 batting average with nine doubles, five home runs and 29 RBI. Bennett has currently reached base in 35-straight games, the fourth-longest streak in program history.
 
As a team, Samford currently leads the SoCon in home runs with 72 and ranks third in batting average at .310. Individually, Michael Ross leads the league in ERA (2.67), wins (9) and opposing batting average (.218). Anderson leads the SoCon in batting average, hitting .401 so far this season.
 
North Alabama enters the week with a record of 14-27 overall and 6-15 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Lions will play at Middle Tennessee Tuesday evening before taking on Samford Wednesday.
 
The Lions have been led at the plate so far this season by Gehrig Frei, batting .338 with 11 doubles, 11 home runs and 36 RBI. Kyle Machado is currently hitting .303 with six doubles, five homers and 28 RBI.
