Samford Outslugs UNCG For Saturday Sweep

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On a day that saw the Samford softball team score 20 runs on the defending Southern Conference champions, the Bulldogs took both ends of the Saturday doubleheader against the UNCG Spartans by scores of 8-3 and 12-0 in five innings.

With the Saturday sweep, Samford improves to 11-25 on the season and climbs back to .500 in league play at 4-4. Saturday marked the first SoCon defeat of the season for UNCG as the Spartans will enter the weekend finale with records of 23-16 and 6-2.

In game one, Jordyn Partain picked up her sixth win of the year by tossing seven strong innings of three-run ball. The junior struck out a quartet of Spartans in her SoCon-best ninth complete game of the season.

The infield Bulldog duo of Sarah Squillace and Katie Campbell led the offensive charge in game one with the pairing each driving in two runs. Not to be outdone, Olivia Shaw had one of her best games of the year going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one driven in.

To round out the Samford attack in the series opener, Logan Champion and Linsey Hargis each collected two base knocks and scored once.

Saturday's offensive onslaught started early as the Bulldogs loaded up the bases in the first inning leading to a Campbell groundout that scored McKayla Cothran putting the Samford up 1-0 after the opening frame.

UNCG's lone runs of the day came in the top of the second when Spartans loaded the basses. An RBI single tied the game before a two-run double to center field gave the Spartans a brief 3-1 lead.

Samford's game one comeback began in earnest in the bottom of the third when Campbell made it a 3-2 game with her team-best 10th home run of the season to dead center.

A nondescript fourth gave way to a four-run fifth inning that started when Brantley Drake was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Shaw scored and tied the contest at 3-3.

Following a UNCG pitching change, Squillace blew the game open with a two-run single to right that scored Ansley Yantis and Linsey Hargis. Also in the play, Brantley Drake moved to third. Drake dashed home a handful of pitches later on a double steal that made it 6-3 Bulldogs.

The Samford offense was not finished yet as Champion and Shaw both smacked solo home runs in the sixth to push the final score to 8-3. Champion's dinger was her third of the year and Shaw's was her second.

Game two saw freshman Karley Fuller throw a two-hit shutout for her third win of the season. Along with the two hits, Fuller only walked a pair of Spartans and fanned one.

In the nightcap, Hargis enjoyed her best performance as a Bulldog going 2-for-2 with four RBIs and scoring once. Cothran was Hargis' co-pilot on the afternoon with a 4-for-4 performance with two more RBIs while also scoring a run. Grier Bruce also collected three hits while driving in two runs and scoring more herself. Campbell's hot day continued in the second game with two more hits and two more RBIs.

In total, four Bulldogs drove in multiple runs as Samford strung together a season-high 18 hits in the 12-0 rout.

Just like in the first game, Campbell got to work early with a two-run single in the home half of the first that opened the flood games and put the Bulldogs up 2-0 after the opening frame.

Following a leadoff walk to open the second, Yantis made it a 3-0 game by scurrying home on a bunt single from Cothran that forced a Spartan throwing error.

Samford's big inning came in the third as 13 Bulldogs were sent to the plate with nine of them scoring. The nine-run outburst was highlighted by a three-run home run from Hargis, a two-run single by Cothran and a two-run double by Bruce.

All nine runs in the frame came with no outs and the last one was scored on a Hargis sacrifice fly to make it 12-0 Samford. The run scored by Champion was Hargis' fourth RBI of the inning alone.

In response to the nine-run inning, Fuller only allowed two base runners over the final two innings to give the Bulldogs their second SoCon series victory of the year.

Samford's 12-0 win on Saturday is the largest margin of victory for either team in the 53-game series history between the Bulldogs and the Spartans.
