GAME NOTES--SAMFORD VS. KENTUCKY (PDF)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team will play host to the 10th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The game can be seen live on ESPN+.
Samford will start right-handed pitcher
Heath Clevenger in Tuesday night's game. Clevenger has an 0-0 record and a 5.84 ERA. Kentucky has not listed a starter yet for Tuesday night's contest.
Samford and Kentucky have met just four previous times, with the series tied at 2-2. The teams last met in 2002, with Kentucky taking a 9-1 win in Birmingham. Tuesday night's game marks the fourth of six games against SEC opponents on Samford's 2024 schedule. The Bulldogs have already played at Auburn and hosted both Mississippi State and Alabama. They also have a game at Alabama and a game against Auburn at the Hoover Met coming up this season.
Samford has a record of 21-10 overall and 6-0 in SoCon play. Last midweek, Samford lost a hard-fought 11-10 game to 11th-ranked Alabama. Over the weekend, Samford swept a three-game series at The Citadel.
So far this season, Samford has been led at the plate by
John Anderson, batting .430 with eight doubles, seven home runs and 35 RBI.
Garrett Howe is hitting 429 with 10 doubles, five home runs and 26 RBI.
Andrew Bennett is hitting .409 with nine doubles, two home runs and 18 RBI.
As a team, Samford currently leads the Southern Conference in home runs with 48 and ranks third in batting average at .316. Individually, Anderson leads the SoCon in batting average (.430), while Howe ranks second in the league (.429). Howe also ranks second in runs scored (45) and on-base percentage (.564), while he leads the SoCon in walks (31).
Kentucky enters Tuesday night's game with a mark of 27-4 overall and 11-1 in the SEC. Over the weekend, the Wildcats swept a three-game series from Alabama, winning by scores of 6-2, 7-0 and 10-1.
Kentucky has been led at the plate by Nick Lopez, batting .393 with 13 doubles, two home runs and 23 RBI. Emilien Pitre is batting .336 with 12 doubles, four home runs and a team-high 33 RBI.
