BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team dropped an 8-5 decision to the Wofford Terriers in the second game of a three-game series Friday at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the loss, Samford fell to 34-19 overall and 14-6 in Southern Conference play. If Samford can win Saturday's regular-season finale, the Bulldogs will win a share of the SoCon regular-season title. Wofford improved to 34-17 overall and 11-8 in league games.
Samford was led in the loss by
Garrett Staton, going 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Garrett Howe and
Andrew Bennett had two hits each.
Aaron Walton went 1-for-3 with a home run and four RBI.
Noah Berry (0-2) pitched two thirds of an inning, giving up five runs on three hits to take the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs.
"It was just a tough outing for Berry, he's been really good for us and had been really consistent and it really just escalated quickly on him," Samford head coach Tony David said. "They saw it well, they didn't take an uncomfortable swing in his brief outing. It was two outs and nobody on, and you blinked, and they had two or three runs in and a couple of guys on. Then we did what we do, and we answered right back and Walton had the big three-run homer to make it 5-4 and we had our chances."
For Wofford, Daniel Jackson went 3-for-4 with a triple, a home run and five RBI. Dixon Black and Brice Martinez had two hits each, and Jack Renwick drove in two runs, going 1-for-3 at the plate. Champ Davis (3-0) pitched 5.0 innings in relief, giving up one run on three hits to earn the win on the mound for the Terriers. Alec Bouchard tossed the final inning to pick up his fourth save of the season.
Wofford jumped on top first with five runs in the top of the first inning. Jackson hit a two-run home run, Renwick had a two-run single and Lucas Manning delivered an RBI single as the Terriers took a 5-0 lead.
Samford answered with a run in the second inning when Bennett scored on a ground out by Walton to make the score 5-1. In the third inning, Walton hit a three-run home run to right-center field to cut the lead to 5-4.
Wofford added a run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Jackson and two runs in the sixth inning on a two-run triple by Jackson to push its lead to 8-4. Samford added one final run in the sixth inning when Staton singled to drive in Walton to make the score 8-5.
The teams will conclude their series on Saturday with a game set for 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The game can be seen live on ESPN+, and fans can also follow the game online via live stats. For links to follow all of Samford's games this season, click on the following link:
