BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Former Samford track and field standouts Tray Oates and
Matt Cahoon will compete in the upcoming 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials held in Eugene, Ore., at historic Hayward Field.
Oates will compete in the men's pole vault, while Cahoon will see action in the men's javelin.
The men's pole vault will have qualifying on Friday, June 21 starting at 7:50 p.m. CT with the finals slated for 7:45 p.m. on Sunday.
The men's javelin will get underway with qualifying on June 21 at 5:30 p.m. before the finals on June 23 at 6:40 p.m. start time. The top three finishers in each event qualify for the U.S. Olympic team.

Oates competed in the Olympic Trials in 2021 and finished 17th after narrowly missing the 2016 Olympics with a fourth-place finish. He holds the Samford record for the indoor pole vault at 5.63 meters, and the outdoor pole vault with a jump of 5.66 meters.
This will be Cahoon's first time to compete in the Olympic Trials. Cahoon, who is an assistant track and field coach at Black Hills State in South Dakota, ranks second all-time in Samford program history with a javelin throw of 68.55 meters.
The two former Bulldogs will be joined at the trials by current Samford star Zephaniah Carico-McLennan, who is running in the 800-meter race.
