Carico-McLennan Set For Olympic Trials Thursday

EUGENE, Ore.– Samford's Zephaniah Carico-McLennan will attempt to qualify for the 2024 U.S. Olympic team by competing in the men's 800m this weekend at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

The Olympic Trials are being held in Eugene, Ore., at historic Hayward Field. Preliminaries for the men's 800m are slated for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CT.  Semifinals will take place on Friday at 8:39 p.m. CT with the finals scheduled for 6:51 pm. CT on Sunday.

In the first round, the top six from each heat plus the three fastest times will advance to the semifinals. All the action can be streamed on Peacock and viewed on NBC.

Carico-McLennan qualified with his school-record time of 1:46.75 at the NCAA East Regional Meet on May 24. The Austin, Texas native swept the 800 meters at the Southern Conference Indoor and Outdoor championships this spring while finishing 15th in a hotly contested 800-meter race at the NCAA East Regional in May.

This marks the third straight Olympics that a member of the Samford track and field program has qualified for the trials. In 2016, Tray Oates reached the finals of the trials in the pole vault while Justin Stuckey participated in the high jump event during the 2021 trials.
