WACO, Texas. – The Samford University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (13-25, 19-25, 12-25) decision at 18
th-ranked Baylor on the final day of the Baylor Classic Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, Samford fell to 5-2 on the season. Baylor improved its record to 7-2 with the win.
Samford was led by
Kaleigh Meritt with 10 kills and seven digs.
Kate Morgan had a team-high nine digs, while
Lexi Thatcher tallied a team-high 20 assists.
For Baylor, Allie Sczech finished with 10 kills. Lauren Briseno led all players with 17 digs for the Bears.
In the first set, after Samford scored the first three points, Baylor came back to tie the score at 5-5. With Samford leading, 10-7, Baylor went on a 9-0 run to take a 16-10 lead. The Bears extended their lead to 22-12 and eventually won the set, 25-13.
Baylor jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the second set. Samford then came back to tie the score at 9-9, but Baylor scored seven of the next eight points to take a 16-10 lead. Samford could get no closer than four points the rest of the set, with Baylor taking the set by a score of 25-19.
In the third set, Baylor led from start to finish. The Bears led by as many as 14 points in the set and Baylor won the set, 25-12, and the match, 3-0.
Next up, Samford will play in the Alabama Challenge at UAB's Bartow Arena next week. The Bulldogs will take on Auburn on Thursday, South Alabama on Friday and UAB on Saturday.
