BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford baseball team opened up the spring season today with the first practice as the process continues for getting ready for the February 14 season opener. The 2025 team, which features a lot of new faces, worked out today at Joe Lee Griffin Field with a practice before the first scrimmage of the year.
Â
"Its the first day so there is a level of excitement that's hard to match," Samford head coach Tony David said. "We had tough conditions today with the cold and heavy winds but it was a great practice. We got in a six-inning scrimmage on the back end. Our pitchers threw well, a lot of strikes, and they competed really well. The standout for the day was defense. I thought the guys were really locked in and made a number of high level plays in the infield."
Â
The Bulldogs are looking to reload this year after losing almost every contributor on offense a season ago, which included eight everyday players departing.
"I am excited about our talent level," David said. "These next three weeks are about getting better and deciding who the starting nine will be. We have a lot of really good position battles going on."
Â
The work will continue Saturday with a noon practice. The team will hit batting practice on the field and then play an eight-inning scrimmage game at 1:15. The public is welcome to attend.
