Bulldogs Sweep The Citadel on Senior Night

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford volleyball team wrapped up regular season play tonight as they hosted The Citadel at the Pete Hanna Center. The Bulldogs honored five seniors prior to the match as they looked dominant in their victory over the road Bulldogs. Samford's record moves to 14-14 after the 3-0 win, 25-21, 25-9, 25-20.

Samford was able to jump out to a quick start against the visitors as they got up 9-3 in the opening set. A Citadel scoring run got the score to 12-11, but Samford was able to stay ahead and control the remainder of the opening set as they captured it 25-21. On a night where the Bulldogs honored their senior class, seniors Kaleigh Meritt and Greer Golden led the Bulldogs in kills with eight each. Samford also honored and started Samantha Horn, Amelia Johnston, and Sophia Plasman.

The second set was totally controlled by the home side as they got up early and never looked back on their way to a 25-9 set win. Samford hit .321 in the set while the visitors hit in the negatives. The Citadel played their best in the final set as they led for the first time all night early on, but four straight points in the middle of the set on Ally Cordes' serve but Samford back ahead for good as they took the final frame 25-20.

Behind Meritt and Golden in kills for the Bulldogs were Cordes and Plasman, who each finished with seven apiece. Samford setters Shea Bruntmyer and Horn had 16 and 11 assists, respectively, as they split time throughout the night. Samford had a season-high 15 blocks on the night, led by Janie Stichcomb and Plasman who each had four blocks.

The home Bulldogs finished off the visitors, who were winless in Southern Conference play this season, and will now turn their attention to postseason play and the SoCon Tournament. Samford has closed the season with four-straight wins as they will be the fifth or sixth seed in the SoCon Tournament which begins on Nov. 21.
