Samford Softball Set for Home Opener Tomorrow Against UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford softball team is set for its season opener tomorrow as they host UAB to kick off a three-day tournament hosted by the Bulldogs. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 5 p.m. as the stand-alone game for the night followed by games on Saturday and Sunday as UAB and Indiana State join the Bulldogs in the three-team field.

The Dogs got off to a 2-2 start during their opening weekend as they played at the Trojan Invitational. Samford went 1-1 each day as they opened with a loss to North Texas followed by a win over Central Michigan. The next day, they dropped the first game to Tennessee State before run-ruling Troy to close the event.

The Bulldogs were scheduled to travel to face Jacksonville State on Wednesday on the road, but the game was postponed due to inclement weather early in the day. The game was rescheduled in Jacksonville on March 11.

The crosstown rivals, UAB and Samford, meet on Friday for the 33rd time in program history with the Blazers holding a 26-6 series lead all-time. These two squads faced off once last season, with UAB taking the game 10-4 in 10 innings. UAB has won the last 9 games of the series and has started their season 4-1 at a tournament hosted by South Alabama.

The Bulldogs and the Sycamores have played six games against each other all time. They have split the series 3-3 and last met during the 2022 season. Indiana State sits at 1-4 on their year after starting with five games at a tournament hosted by FGCU.

Samford is off to a strong start at the plate, led by reliable returners McKayla Cothran, Katie Campbell, and Olivia Shaw who all hit over .400 during the opening weekend. They got a spark from freshman Joi Hubbard who had a fantastic start to her collegiate career as she started every game, hit .545, scored six runs, and was a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen bases. In the circle, Jordan Partain was dominant in her second start of the season as she threw a complete game, five innings, holding Troy to two hits as the Dogs won 12-0.
