GAME NOTES--SAMFORD AT JAX STATE (PDF)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team will play on the road for the first time this season when the Bulldogs play at in-state rival Jacksonville State Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Rudy Abbott Field at Jim Case Stadium.
Samford is scheduled to start right-handed pitcher
Brooks Rice on the mound for his first start of the 2025 season. Jacksonville State has listed right-hander Alex Pipes as its starting pitcher.
Samford and Jacksonville State will be meeting for the 91st time, with JSU holding a 54-36 series lead. Last season, Samford won both meetings. The Bulldogs earned a 7-3 win in Birmingham and then another 7-3 victory in Jacksonville.
Samford enters Tuesday afternoon's game with a record of 3-0. The Bulldogs opened the season by sweeping a series with Valparaiso, winning the games by scores of 4-2, 14-4 in seven innings and 15-5 in seven innings.
Samford was led at the plate in last weekend's series by
Cade Carr, batting .556 (5-for-9) with a home run and 10 RBI. A few players making their Samford debuts had big weekends.
Michael Gupton batted .500 (5-of-10) with a double and a triple.
Jeffrey Ince hit .444 (4-for-9) with a double and an RBI. Freshmen
Gus Gandy and
Jake Souders both had strong performances. Gandy hit .400 (4-for-10) with a double and four RBI. Souders hit his first collegiate home run and drove in five runs in the series.
Jacksonville State has a record of 3-1. Tbe Gamecocks won two-of-three games from Oakland over the weekend. Drew Collins led the Gamecocks with six hits and five RBI in the series.
