SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Samford freshman guard
Claire Johnson was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week when the league released its weekly women's basketball awards Tuesday afternoon.
Johnson had back-to-back career games in Samford's two games last week. She scored a then career-high 26 points, to go along with six rebounds and four steals in an overtime win at Western Carolina Thursday night. In Saturday's game at UNC Greensboro, she surpassed that career high with 30 points, while grabbing five rebounds and three steals. For the week, she averaged 28.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game.
For the season, Johnson currently ranks third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.5 points per game. She leads the team and ranks second in the SoCon in three-point field goal percentage, making 41.3 percent of her attempts from beyond the arc.
Samford will return home this week to play host to the Mercer Bears. The game is set for a 2 p.m. start from the Pete Hanna Center.
