BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford softball team heads north to Florence, Ala. for the weekend as they compete in the North Alabama Tournament. The Bulldogs play five games, starting with matchups against Detroit and Louisiana Monroe tomorrow. Samford enters the weekend with a 13-7 record.
After winning six of seven games, the Bulldogs are coming off a home midweek defeat to No. 22 ranked Alabama 9-2. After a hot-hitting start to the game, the Dogs bats went quiet in the back half of the game.
Sara Bond was solid in relief, going 4.2 innings and now carrying a 2.92 earned run average for the season.
Samford opens the tournament against Detroit on Friday, with the first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. The Titans have a 1-8 record on the season and face Alabama A&M today in a doubleheader. Samford defeated Detroit 19-0 last season when the two sides met. After the Titans, the Bulldogs face a ULM team at 1:30 p.m. that carries a 15-8 record on the season. The Dogs have won the previous two meetings against the Warhawks but the two sides haven't played since 2021.
The top half of the Bulldogs lineup has been hot of late as
Olivia Shaw has taken her average to .397 after a hot Florida Invitational and
Grier Bruce hit three homers in four games in Gainesville.
McKayla Cothran has set the table from the leadoff spot all year hitting .366 and leading the team with 26 hits while
Katie Campbell has 20 RBIs and four homers and has a team-high 1.056 OPS.
The Bulldogs will face North Alabama and ULM on Saturday before closing the tournament with another game with the hosts UNA. The Lions are off to a strong start and carry a 15-3 record on the season.
