Samford Baseball Takes Series Win With 8-5 Victory Over The Citadel

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team earned another Southern Conference series win with an 8-5 victory over The Citadel Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
 
With the win, Samford improved its record to 20-16 overall and 6-3 in Southern Conference play. The Citadel fell to 19-17 overall and 4-5 in league play. Samford wins the series over The Citadel, two games to one.
 
Mason Blasche (5-0) pitched 7.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out seven batters to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
 
"Mason was incredible again," Samford head coach Tony David said. "He's slid into that Sunday role and has only had one outing that wasn't great."
 
At the plate for Samford, Jeffrey Ince and Cade Carr had three hits each, with Carr driving in two runs. Parker McDonald had a home run and a double, going 2-for-5 with an RBI. Matthew Strand went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Jake Souders also went 2-for-4 for the Bulldogs.
 
For The Citadel, T.J. Anderson went 4-for-5 at the plate. Anthony Hausner went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Phillips Daniels homered for The Citadel, going 1-for-4 with an RBI. Chandler Anderson (1-2) pitched 5.0, giving up five runs on nine hits to take the loss on the mound for The Citadel.
 
After The Citadel took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning, Samford came back with a run in the fourth inning and another in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead. In the fourth inning, McDonald hit his team-leading 10th home run of the season to center field to tie the score. In the fifth inning, Samford took the lead for good when Carr singled to drive in Ince.
 
Samford added three runs in the sixth inning and one run in the seventh inning to push its lead to 6-1. In the sixth inning, Strand, Gus Gandy and Jackson Harris drove in a run each. In the seventh inning, McDonald scored on a sacrifice fly by Gandy to give Samford a five-run lead.
 
The Citadel came back with three runs in the top of the eighth inning to cut the lead to 6-4. Samford, however, answered with two runs in the bottom of the of the eighth to push the lead back to 8-4. Carr had an RBI single and Strand was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give Samford a four-run lead. The Citadel added one final run in the ninth inning to make the final score 8-5.
 
Next up, Samford will play at North Alabama on Tuesday, April 15. The game is set for a 4 p.m. start from Florence, Ala.
