Baseball To Travel To VMI For SoCon Series

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
 – The Samford University baseball team will travel to Lexington, Va., for a three-game Southern Conference series at VMI. The teams are scheduled to play Thursday at 5 p.m. (CT), Friday at 5 p.m. (CT) and Saturday at 12 p.m. (CT).
 
Samford and VMI have met 37 previous times, with Samford holding a 29-8 series lead. Last season, the teams met in a series at Joe Lee Griffin Field, with Samford sweeping the series by scores of 14-4, 16-9 and 5-4.
 
Samford enters the weekend with a record of 20-16 overall and 6-3 in SoCon play. Last weekend, Samford won two-of-three games from The Citadel. Samford took game one, 9-8, The Citadel won the second game, 4-3 and Samford took the series win with an 8-5 win on Sunday. Tuesday's game at North Alabama was canceled.
 
Samford is scheduled to start left-handed pitcher Miller Riggins on Thursday and right-hander Cameron Keshock on Friday. Samford has not named a starter for Saturday's game yet.
 
Cade Carr is currently leading Samford in hitting with a .354 (46-for-130) average with 10 doubles, five home runs and a team-high 44 RBI. His 44 RBI rank fifth in the Southern Conference. Jeffrey Ince is hitting .333 (44-for-132) with 11 doubles, four home runs and 20 RBI. Michael Gupton is hitting .325 (39-for-120) with six doubles, six home runs and 23 RBI. Jake Souders is hitting .324 (47-for-145) with nine doubles, six home runs and 31 RBI. Jackson Harris has an average of .312 (39-for-125) with nine doubles, a home run and 28 RBI.
 
VMI enters the series with a record of 24-14 overall and 4-5 in Southern Conference play. The Keydets took a midweek win over George Washington. Last weekend, VMI won two-of-three games at Ohio.
 
VMI has listed right-handed pitcher Justin Spiegel as its starter for Thursday, left-handed pitcher Jaxon Lloyd as its starter on Friday and the Keydets have not named a starter for game three yet.
 
VMI has been led offensively so far this season by Bradley Garner, batting .382 (50-for-131) with 10 doubles, five home runs and 47 RBI. Boston Torres is hitting .373 with 12 doubles, 10 home runs and 58 RBI.
