Samford Names Warren Head Women’s Golf Coach

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford has named Shane Warren as its head women's golf coach, the university announced Friday.

"We're excited to welcome Shane Warren to the Samford family as our new head women's golf coach," Director of Athletics Martin Newton said. "His experience, leadership and vision for developing student-athletes make him a great fit for our program. We look forward to the impact he'll have both on and off the course."

Warren comes to Samford after spending the last two seasons as an assistant women's golf coach at Tulane. While with the Green Wave, he assisted with the implementation of a new team culture and processes. He also customized the golf instruction based on players' needs and he helped in the planning and execution of three tournaments hosted by Tulane.

Prior to his time at Tulane, Warren spent over a decade in the business world. His previous coaching experience includes serving as the assistant men's golf coach (2005-12) and assistant women's golf coach (2003-06) at LSU.

On the men's side, Warren was involved in all aspects of the program, and he mentored two All-Americans, two All-American Scholars, three All-SEC performers, four members of the SEC All-Freshman team, including three time All-American and 2011 NCAA Division I Individual National Champion, John Peterson. He was a semifinalist for the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Jan Strickland National Assistant Coach of the Year Award in 2010 and a finalist for the same award in 2011.

With the women's team at LSU, Warren was heavily involved in recruiting. He also assisted the head coach in hosting multiple LSU home golf events as well as the 2003 SEC Women's Golf Championship. He also boosted the performance of individual athletes by devising strategic personal training programs and working on techniques and fundamentals. In 2005, he earned the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) National Assistant Coach of the Year Award.

Warren began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach at Alabama from 1999 to 2002. While with the Crimson Tide, Warren recruited and evaluated prospective student-athletes, and he monitored and tracked the performance and progress of the student-athletes.

Before entering the college coaching world, Warren spent five years serving as a golf professional and instructor at various clubs around Florida and Alabama.

A native of Tuscaloosa, Ala. Warren graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Sports and Fitness Management. He and his wife, Elise, have a daughter named Ellagrace.
