Bulldogs Earn Senior Day Win Over Miami Of Ohio, 8-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team picked up an 8-1 win over Miami of Ohio on Senior Day for the Bulldogs Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
 
With the win, Samford improved its season record to 24-22. Miami of Ohio Fell to 26-20 with the loss.
 
Samford was led in the win by Michael Gupton, going 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Matthew Strand went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI for the Bulldogs.
 
Mason Blasche (8-0) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing no runs on five hits and striking out three batters without allowing a walk to earn the win on the mound for Samford. Josh Leerssen, Will Lynch, John Whitney, Brooks Rice and Evan Steckmesser also saw time on the mound for Samford.
 
"You couldn't have drawn it up any more perfect from start to finish," Samford head coach Tony David said. "Mason was great again. His velo was back up and he did what he does out there. We had a bunch of really good at bats and we got on the board early with some quality at bats."
 
For Miami of Ohio, Anthony Zarlingo went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Dillon Baker went 3-for-4 for the Redhawks. Carson Byers (1-2) pitched 3.0 innings, allowing three runs on two hits to take the loss for Miami.
 
Samford jumped on top early with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jake Souders hit a sacrifice fly to score Jeffrey Ince for the first run of the game. Strand later doubled to drive in two runs for a 3-0 Samford lead.
 
The Bulldogs added three more runs in the fourth inning on a three-run home run by Gupton to push the lead to 6-0. In the fifth inning, Samford plated two more runs on RBI singles by Strand and Gupton to make the score 8-0. Miami scored its lone run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Zarlingo to make the final score 8-1.
 
Samford will play host to Troy Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
