Samford Baseball Falls At Home To No. 19 Troy, 12-8

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team dropped a 12-8 decision to the 19th-ranked Troy Trojans Wednesday evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

With the loss, Samford fell to 24-23 on the season. Troy improved to 35-15 with the win.

"We competed well again against another top 20 team," Samford head coach Tony David said. "Our guys really stood in well at the plate with a lot of good swings. I love the way we hit their closer the last two innings."

For Samford at the plate, Jeffrey Ince went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Gatlin Pitts and Michael Gupton both homered for the Bulldogs.

Heath Clevenger (1-2) pitched 2.0 innings, giving up five runs, just two earned, on seven hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford. Brooks Rice, Cullen Horowicz, Noah Berry and Drew Druckenmiller also saw time on the mound for Samford.

"Brooks was electric in relief and Horowicz had really good stuff up to 90 tonight with a really good slider," David said. "Pitts had a big swing to get us back into it late, but we lost the strike zone in the ninth. We are ready for a big weekend."

Troy was led by Brooks Bryan, going 3-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI. Blake Cavill went 3-for-6 with a home run and two RBI, while Peyton Watts went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Grady Gorgen (3-0) pitched 3.0 innings in relief, allowing just one run to earn the win on the mound for the Trojans.

Samford got on the scoreboard first when Ince scored on a Troy error in the bottom of the first inning to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

Troy came back with five runs in the top of the second inning. Gavin Schrader had an RBI single and later scored when Steven Meier grounded into a double play. Dillon Kuehl scored on a Samford error and Cavill hit a two-run home run as Troy built a 5-1 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, Samford came back with two runs to cut the lead to 5-3. Gus Gandy doubled to drive in Matthew Strand, and Ince doubled to drive in Gandy to pull Samford to within two runs.

Each team plated a run in the fifth inning. Troy's run came on a home run by Bryan, while Samford's run came on a homer by Gupton, and Troy held a 6-4 lead.

In the top of the seventh inning, Troy added three runs. Bryan hit a two-run home run and Watts had an RBI double as the Trojans stretched their lead to 9-4.

Samford came back with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on a three-run home run by Pitts to cut the lead to 9-7. In the top of the ninth Troy added three runs on RBI by Kuehl, Watts and Houston Markham to build a 12-7 lead.

Samford added one final run in the bottom of the ninth inning when Jackson Harris singled up the middle to drive in Ince to make the final score 12-8.
