Samford Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader From UNC Greensboro

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team swept a Southern Conference doubleheader from UNC Greensboro Friday at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The Bulldogs won the first game, 14-2 in seven innings and then took game two, 12-2 in seven innings.

With the sweep, Samford now has a record of 26-23 overall and 11-6 in Southern Conference play. UNCG fell to 19-29 overall and 8-9 in league play.

Samford was led in game one by Parker McDonald, going 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI. Jeffrey Ince went 2-for-3 with a home run and one RBI. Gus Gandy went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Jake Souders went 2-for-3 at the plate. Michael Gupton also homered, going 1-for-4 with two RBI. Miller Riggins (4-2) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up two runs on two hits and striking out 10 batters to earn the win on the mound for Samford.

"This was just a complete performance by the guys," Samford head coach Tony David said. "Riggins had a tough first inning, but he had the big strikeout with the bases loaded. And then we came in and Jeff got us started with the single and we put a four-spot up on Parker's three-run blast. And then Riggins went right back out there and put up three zeros in a row, and that was critical for the momentum of the day."

For UNCG in game one, J.J. Parsons homered, going 1-for-3 with one RBI. Luke Jenkins also drove in a run for the Spartans. Sam Murchison (5-5) pitched 3.0 innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits to take the loss for UNCG.

After UNCG took an early lead with a run in the top of the first inning, Samford plated four runs in the first inning, one run in the second inning and one run in the third to take a 6-1 lead. In the first inning, Cade Carr doubled to drive in Ince for Samford's first run. McDonald later hit a three-run home run for a 4-1 Samford lead. In the second inning, Ince hit a solo home run to push the lead to 5-1. In the third inning, Gandy reached on an infield single, scoring Souders for a 6-1 score.

The Spartans plated a run in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 6-2, but Samford plated six runs in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead to 12-2. Jackson Harris and Carr drove in the first two runs. McDonald then drove in two runs with a double and Gupton hit a two-run homer for a 10-run Samford lead.

Samford added two final runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the final score 14-2. Gandy and Angelo Prieto drove in a run each to give Samford a 12-run advantage.

In game two, Ince and Harris had two hits and two RBI each. Matthew Strand went 2-for-3, while Souders homered, going 1-for-4 with three RBI. Cameron Keshock (5-3) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up two runs on six hits and striking out six batters to earn the win on the mound.

For UNCG in the second game, Jacob Budzik went 2-for-3 with a double. Hunter Shuey (1-6) gave up four runs in 1.0 inning of work to take the loss for the Spartans.

Samford got things started in game two with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Prieto walked with the bases loaded for the first run. Gupton and Gandy both scored on wild pitches to make the score 3-0. Prieto later scored on a sacrifice fly by Carr to give Samford a 4-0 lead.

After UNCG plated a run in the third inning, Samford came back with three runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth inning to run its lead to 9-1. In the fourth inning, Souders hit a three-run home run. In the fifth inning, Ince and Harris drove in a run each for an eight-run Samford lead.

After the Spartans added a run in the top of the sixth inning, Samford plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth, pushing the lead to 12-2. Prieto, Ince and Harris drove in a run each as Samford built a 10-run advantage.
