BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The
Samford volleyball team picked up its first win of the season Sunday, outlasting Troy 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-9) at the Pete Hanna Center.
With the win, Samford split the opening season weekend in The Pete Hanna Center, 1-1 .
Samford was led in the win by
Kaleigh Meritt with 19 kills and six digs.
Ally Cordes followed with 14 kills and 10 digs.
Greer Golden had 10 kills in the win while
Sophia Plasman had six kills including the match point during the fifth set.
For Troy, Amiah Butler led the Trojans with 24 kills and eight digs.
In the first set, Troy jumped out to an early 4-1 lead but the Bulldogs fought back and with an ace from Freshmen
Emma Sorensen, the Bulldogs took a 15-14 lead. Bulldogs and Trojans traded points after that and ended with the Bulldogs taking the set, 25-22.
"Our Freshmen did a great job," head coach
Keylor Chan said after the win. "Emma came in and impressed us and really steadied some things out and did a fantastic job for her first match in college."
Samford went on to fight but lose the second and third set but battled back and won the fourth set by 2 points, 25-23.
Greer Golden won the set for the Bulldogs with a kill assisted by
Shea Bruntmyer to push the match to the fifth set.
In the fifth and deciding set, Troy scored the first two points but Bulldogs went on to dominate the set. Samford was able to take an 10-6 lead on an attack error by Troy. Samford continued to score most of the next points and won the set, 15-9 and the match, 3-2, with the final point being a kill by
Sophia Plasman.
The Bulldogs return to action at the Tennessee Invitational in Knoxville, TN, facing Winthrop on Thursday, Sept. 4, at 4 p.m. before taking on Tennessee on Friday at 1 p.m."
