KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Samford volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (13-25, 14-25, 13-25) decision at Tennessee Friday afternoon at the Food City Center.
 
With the loss, Samford fell to 2-2 on the young season. Tennessee improved its record to 3-1 with the win.
 
Samford was led in the loss by Kaleigh Meritt with six kills and four digs. Ally Cordes had four kills and five digs for the Bulldogs.
 
For Tennessee, Hayden Kubik had 18 kills and eight digs. Gulce Guctekin produced a team-high 14 digs for the Volunteers.
 
The score was close early in the first set until, with Tennessee leading, 13-11, the Vols went on a 9-1 run to push the lead to 22-12. Tennessee took the first set, 25-13.
 
In the second set, Tennessee led, 8-7 early, but the Vols pulled away with an 11-5 run to take a 19-12 lead. With the score 19-13, the Vols scored six of the next seven points to close the set with a 25-14 win.
 
Samford took an early 2-1 lead in the third set, but Tennessee answered with a 16-6 run to take a 17-8 lead. Tennessee pushed its lead to 11 points at 23-12 and the Vols finished with a 25-13 set win and a 3-0 match victory.
 
Next up, Samford will play at North Alabama on Tuesday, Sept. 9. The match is set for a 6 p.m. start from Florence, Ala.
